The Biology Peer Advisors are your go-to mentors for all-things related to BIOSC majors, courses, extra-curriculars, and work-life balance. These second, third, and fourth year students across most of the BIOSC majors are here to share their experiences: how they survived their first year on campus, how they chose their major, how to get on a waitlist, how to ask a professor for a letter of recommendation, but also important extracurricular questions such as which clubs they love, how to play quidditch without a flying broomstick, which bathrooms to avoid. Our Peer Advisors have weekly office hours for drop-in questions, but will also host events throughout the semester. GraceHi! My name is Grace and I’m a current senior from Cleveland, OH. I’m majoring in Biological Sciences with a minor in Dance. I’m an undergraduate researcher at the Vascular Medicine Institute where I am investigating the anatomic distribution and expression of matricellular proteins in the cerebral vasculature of Alzheimer's Disease subjects. This project has evolved into a thesis, of which I will be defending in fulfillment of the Bachelor of Philosophy degree. On campus, I’m a dancer and board member for Pitt Dance Ensemble, a volunteer at UPMC, a brand manager for Serengetee, and a University Honors College mentor. I also studied abroad with the Pitt in Greece program. One of my favorite memories at Pitt was the Pitt-Penn State game where we won 42-39! Hail to Pitt! Hana Hi everyone! My name is Hana Mujkovic, and I am a senior Biological Sciences and German Language and Cultural Studies double major. I am particularly interested in language learning (I also speak Serbo-Croatian), and the field of genetics, specifically CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing, which I worked with at the Magee-Womens Research Institute in Pittsburgh and the Helmholtz Zentrum in Munich, Germany. I had a blast studying abroad in Berlin and am currently a microbiology lab UTA, an Honors College peer mentor, and VP of the Dental Science Club. My other interests include tennis, skiing, pugs, and drinking taro bubble tea. HannahHi guys! My name is Hannah Han and I am a senior Biological Sciences Major also pursuing the Conceptual Foundations of Medicine Certificate. My plans are to go to medical school (I’m specifically interested in primary care and community health) but am planning on taking a gap year before that. At Pitt I’m involved with research, volunteering, and organizations, and I’d love to talk to you more about these if you’re interested or have questions! I’m originally from Philly—and my heart remains there—but I love to explore Pittsburgh through its museums, galleries, and amazing food! I also love watching films and am always looking for Netflix recommendations. Hope to see you soon! LisaHello! My name is Lisa, and I'm very excited to be one of your Biological Sciences Peer Advisors for the semester! For those of you who don’t know me, here’s a little bit about myself. I’m majoring in Microbiology, minoring in Chemistry, and working towards the American Sign Language Studies Certificate. Starting this semester, I’ll be working in the Hainer lab, so I also plan on applying for the Life Sciences Research Certificate. Additionally, I dive for the Varsity Women’s Swimming and Diving Team, and I’m involved in the Campus Women’s Organization. As for non-Pitt things about me, I do concert photography, write a little, and read a lot. The past two summers I’ve worked at an orthopedic physical therapy clinic back in New Jersey (yes, I’m from New Jersey—no, I don’t say “Joisey”). Over my summers at the physical therapy clinic, I got pretty used to hearing patients say, “Oh, you go to Pitt? I hear they have a really great PT program. That’s what you wanna do, right?” Well, actually, no. I came to Pitt with my big plan of going to medical school, having a twenty-year Army career as a cardiothoracic surgeon, then “retiring into” teaching biology. To put it simply, things have changed. After a very introspective summer, and a wonderful experience as a UTA for Foundations I under an incredibly inspiring professor, I’ve made the decision to follow the PhD/professor route. So, that’s me in a nutshell! I’ll have my office hours on Tuesdays from 1-2pm. Come by to ask questions, talk bio, or even just to take a break from studying and say hello. I’d love to have a chat! And feel free to stop me if you see me wandering around Clapp or Langley. Cheers! MichaelaHello from your Biology Peer Advisor! My name is Michaela Schreyer and I am a junior biology major pursuing a career in medicine. I am originally from Hastings, PA: a small, rural town 2 hours east of Pittsburgh. In addition to my interests in science and medicine, I am very passionate about music and am a part of Pitt Women’s Choral Ensemble. I also like planning and participating in service events on campus and around the city of Pittsburgh. In my spare time, I enjoy scrolling through social media to watch cute dog videos. I am beyond excited to be working with the biology advisors this semester to help create a community and network of familiarity and rapport within our department! NoraMy name is Nora. I’m a junior majoring in molecular biology with a concentration in cell and developmental biology. I have been doing research at the Hillman Cancer Institute in Shadyside for three years. I participate in the Pitt Ballet Club which is lots of fun for anyone interested in dancing (not just ballet). I started out as Pre-Med but recently I realized that might not be the best path for me. I have two guinea pigs and am slightly obsessed with Snoopy and Disney. I would love to talk to anyone who is worried about school stress, life stress, clubs, future, how to get into a research lab, even if you want to learn some fun Disney trivia. OwenHello! My name is Owen Poling and I am a Junior majoring in Biological Sciences. Currently, I have a very strong interest in dentistry, and hope to attend dental school in the next couple of years. During my time at Pitt I have been able to gain experience with research, volunteering, and establishing solid relationships with university faculty and professors. On top of that, I have experience in working in paid positions that are relevant to my studies and career goals. As a Biological Sciences Peer Advisor I strive to help you anyway I can and hope that my experiences and input can assist you in establishing and reaching your goals as well as assuring your time spent with the Bio Department and Faculty is memorable and enjoyable. I look forward to seeing you at campus events or even my office hours! RamyaHi! My name is Ramya, and I’m a sophomore this year. I’m a molecular biology and anthropology major, and I’m minoring in chemistry and French with a certificate in Asian Studies. I love learning new languages! I’m a huge Harry Potter geek, and in general a big movie junkie!
